Performance Roundtables . . . What are they?

The Performance Roundtable Program is the country’s premier peer review and business improvement forum developed specifically for CEOs, presidents, and business owners that want to improve their businesses and further develop their skills as leaders. These programs enable business leaders to rise above day-to-day operational issues and reap the benefits of other members' experiences, insights, and knowledge.

A Roundtable group consists of seven to ten non-competing CEOs or executives from the same industry who meet twice a year at pre-designated host sites for peer review and professionally facilitated discussion of industry issues, best practices, profit opportunities, and business building strategies. All members are carefully screened and matched according to size of business and other criteria.

The Family Business Institute offers a range of Performance Roundtables, each tailored to the specific needs of the industry or association it serves. Examples of organizations with whom the Family Business Institute has strategic relationships are: The Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), and American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).

Starting an Association or Industry Roundtable Program

Research states that executives learn best from their peers. The Roundtables provide a forum for consulting with peers with whom they can develop a deep level of trust which creates an environment that rarely occurs through networking or at industry conferences in large groups with competitors. Many times over in a meeting members will say, “I paid for the whole Roundtable in the last half hour.”

The Family Business Institute is constantly expanding the Performance Roundtable Program into new associations and industries. Sponsorship characteristics favorable for the development of Performance Roundtables include:

  • 2500 or more businesses in your industry
  • Most are family owned or privately held
  • Local or regional in their business scope
  • Progressive thinking in member programs
  • Sufficient staff to market and promote program
  • Desire for non-dues recurring revenue

Performance Roundtable

“Our members who are involved are finding this program very useful. We must stay ahead of our association competition and this program is critical in helping us do that.”

Len Toenjes, President St. Louis Chapter - AGC St. Louis, MO

“The Roundtable program is a perfect fit for our membership that is 98% independent family owned firms. I’m so excited about the program – if I was a funeral director, it is something that I would do.”

Connie Smith, Senior VP of Professional Development - National Funeral Directors Association
