Family Business Planning: The Discovery Process

Get issues to the surface

The Discovery Process™ is a formal, incredibly thorough "getting to know you" process where we learn more about the family business planning objectives. What are the reasons that a family or closely held business contacted us? What are the problems they are currently experiencing, and what are the issues of concern? What are the results or outcomes the stakeholders hope to see? Does the family owned business or closely held business need a few pointers, family business planning consultation, or is there a need for a more in depth analysis?

The Discovery Process™ consists of asking many, many questions of stakeholders, gathering information, establishing chemistry, and determining if there's a fit between what the Family Business Institute offers and the needs of the inquirer. Fundamentally, the process is one of establishing a sound foundation for what may become a working relationship. The Discovery Process™ may take a wide range of times ranging from one meeting with one person to a series of meetings with many stakeholders or groups of stakeholders.
